Most computer retailers no longer supply an XP,Vista or  Windows 7 CD or DVD

Retailers now put all this information on a hidden part of the hard drive, called a "Restore Partition" This is not normally accessible to the user.

Your recovery disk is used to access this part of the hard disk, allowing you to reset your computer back to its factory default settings.

Carrying out this operation can result in the loss of personal data.

When you purchased your PC, with it came software licences to use the XP, Vista or Windows 7 Operating System. These licences are yours  as long as you keep the computer. They are transferable with the hardware to a friend or family member.

This does not mean that you 'own' the Operating System Software However, it does mean that should you need to reinstall it, then you would be able to do so.

You only own the computer on which the Operating System runs and a right to use that Operating System.

It is important to remember that a hard drive is a rotating electro-mechanical device. They can and do fail through natural wear, and de-fragmentation not being performed regularly.  The hard drive unit is the most vulnerable part of any computer system.
